Libros / Books: 'The Casual Vacancy' by J.K. Rowling.

Hola a tod@s:

Hi everyone,

It's been ages since I last brought you a Book Review. The reason? Well, I've barely read anything lately and for some reason I tend to post reviews only of the books I read in my EReader and not those read on my laptop or the iPad. Call me weird.

Excerpt

A big novel about a small town...When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations?

Well, that's what publishers say about the novel and now it's time for what I have to say about it.
I confess I had really high expectations regarding this book, having read many people raving about it. I did like the book, but it's not a masterpiece for me, so to speak.

Though the ending is really, really good, getting there was no easy journey on my part. There were chapters that added little to the story in my opinion, though you later realized that the writer only intends to provide more depth to the different characters in the novel and their motivations.
As far as characters go, there's a little bit of everything: some are intent on fixing the village while neglecting their own home, others couldn't care less about the upcoming election that has the entire town and their relatives in uproar. Other characters you can't help but feel for, such as Sukhvinder or Kristal, who have a really tough life on a regular basis.

If I had to rate this novel on a 1-10 scale, I'd probably give it 6.5 to 7.

As much as I enjoyed this, I enjoyed the first installment of the Cormoran Strike detective series a lot more, which she wrote after this. I reviewed that *here*.

I hope that you enjoyed this book review.
